Appreciating the "Little" Moments

I run for many reasons. There are the "big" reasons why I run and there are the "little" reasons why I run. My "big" reasons are not much different than the ones often listed by runners, including health and fitness benefits, stress release, and relationship building with the ones you run with or run for (in my case my grandfather Flo, my mom Martine, and my wife Christina).

This blog is not about those "big" reasons. It's about the "little" things that make me say: "This is why I run!" As runners, we all have those moments, either before, during, or after our runs, when we are reminded of why we run. After a breakthrough running year in 2013, filled with hard training and PRs, I have come to look for and appreciate these special moments. For 2014, I have even more ambitious running goals. This blog, along with a running log, will help to track my progress toward these goals and reflect on my accomplishments. It may even inspire others to run or help other runners reach that point where running is not just a workout but also an enjoyable part of their day.

Capital Crescent Trail (Summer 2013)
Yesterday morning, Christina and I ran an easy 5.5 mile run. The route we took brought us over the I-270. As we ran over the highway, we watched the morning commuters rush to get to work. When we got home, our morning rush started. Christina showered, I prepared her lunch and got things ready for breakfast. Soon after, she was off to work. Being able to share 40 minutes or so of calmness with my wife early in the morning is special to me.

This is why I run.
